Do you have a “Master Gardener” on staff?

The Texas Master Gardener program is an educational volunteer program conducted by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service of the Texas A&M University System. Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. We have a few Master Gardeners who have joined the Calloway’s team but what makes us unique is the fact that we have the largest number of Texas Certified and Texas Master Certified Nursery Professionals in the State of Texas. Those of us who are certified have gone through very specific training and testing geared toward solving a wide array of horticultural challenges from home vegetables and herbs, lawn and garden fertilization, soil preparation, disease and insect control, weed prevention and control, houseplants as well as being able to make suggestions for your home landscape. This training is based on the latest information provided by the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association in coordination with Texas AgriLife Extension Service of the Texas A&M University System.

Does the type of container I use for planting really matter?

The one thing we are never short of at Calloway’s Nursery are containers. Plastic, Fiberglass, Ceramic, or Terra Cotta, in all shapes, sizes, colors and uses, we have the pot for you. Choosing a pot is more of a cost and design preference over the type required by plants. The first question usually arises “Will this grow in a pot?”

When is the best time to fertilize my lawn?

Calloway’s provides several options for supplying optimum nutrients to establish a healthy, thriving and luxurious lawn. Timing, however, is very important. The first application should coincide with warming and new growth in the spring, which may vary slightly depending on seasonal changes. Both of our premium fertilizers are activated by soil temperature. As the soil warms up, the lawn’s root system is stimulated and after the winter brown you will start seeing green grass again, usually mid-March. This is time for the first application, following with the second 3 months later and a third three months after that. However, if you apply too early under cold temperatures the fertilizer will not be released and the grass is not active enough to take up nutrients. Patience will win out.

What products do you have available for fertilizing my lawn?

The three products available include the basic Calloway’s Premium Lawn Food, 21-5-10 for established or new lawns that have not been fertilized recently or on a regular basis, Calloway’s Premium Lawn Food Phosphorus Free, 21-0-0 for a follow-up on long established and regularly fertilized lawns and the Calloway’s Natural Lawn and Garden Food, 10-3-1, great for those looking for a more natural way to maintain an already perfect lawn. Since Calloway’s Nursery is a Texas based company, you can depend on us to have a formula that is created based on the expert’s recommendations for our area including many micronutrients and supplements not provided by more generic brands. We will fix your soil, feed your grass and provide the great lawn you expect from Calloway’s.

The organization of all of the plants, trees, flowers, vegetables and herbs at Calloways also just makes it easier to find the herbs and flowers quickly and easily compared to big box stores. The variety is unmatched at this location, Custer location and the North Plano location as well. I shop all locations as I look for the most beautiful flowers I can find. Let’s go to the value at all of their locations. I price shop all of the garden stores in the area, from Lowe’s, Home Depot to Christiana’s and more. Calloways has the best pricing for fuller, thicker herbs then anyone else in town their pricing on herbs are almost $2.00 less then Home Depot and or Lowe’s these days, and they look so much better. Christiana’s might be cheaper but the lack of thickness and fullness of their herbs are just putting you behind by a month or more. Trust me, go look. Calloways has come a long way over the decades. They have now become some of the most competitive flowers, herbs and vegetables specialists with great overall value. Go give them a try and if you have go back and try them again after you shop those big store brands. Be sure to sign up for their deals and email notifications. This is the best plant nursery I’ve ever been to and this is coming from someone who has been to a handful of nurseries in the Houston and Austin area over the years. The staff is so kind, friendly and helpful. The quality of everything from the plants to the pots and soil is top notch. I’d like to give a round of applause to the pricing of their plants as well as their selection! It’s quite affordable which I find awesome because you can find varietals of plants you already have and it doesn’t break the bank for being of an “exotic” variety. We had my favorite pot break in a storm.  I called the location in Richardson and asked if I could send a pic of the pot to see if they had a replacement.  They told me I could bring the picture in and they would help me look for it… not helpful.  I called another location and asked if I could email them a pic to see if they had the pot and was told for security reasons they couldn’t give out an email address… (they have my phone number name and address in their system mind you) not helpful. Then I call this Plano location.  Sher answered the phone.  She was great!  Listened to my problem and said I could text her the pic to her personal phone and she would look to see if they had the pit.  I did and 20 seconds later she responded back with a pic of the pits I was looking for!  This save me so much time and frustration from driving around to different locations.  When I got there all the staff including Sher were very helpful with other purchases I made while I was there.  I bought the pot but also spent an additional 400$.  That was a sale missed by the other locations. Thank you Sher!!!
